ARTFUL INSIGHT: Chiharu Shiota: State of Being
Chiharu Shiota: State of Being
25TH JUNE – 23RD JULY 2022
ANNA SCHWARTZ GALLERY
This intimate, and striking installation by Chiharu Shiota is a story that unfolds as one enters the quiet space, surrounded by stillness. A floor-to-ceiling webs made of red knotted strings dangling, and intertwined, to create a massive three-dimensional web.
The back the space reveals intimate miniature worlds made of dense strings that connect and suspend canvas, paper, reclaimed love letters, diaries and photos picked by the artist at flea markets. Arranged as if falling, their composition in complex arrangements of thread suspends them in time.
"I believe that we are all connected. Were you able to see the invisible, all human connection is one. Thread from each heart is expressed as words linking us. In the flea market I found old love letters and diaries and although I never met the writer, I felt connected," explains Shiota.
Chiharu Shiota installation represents the infinite and invisible threads that unite and connects us. It is an embodiment of the complex networks that govern both our external and internal lives.
