Made in Melbourne: What Australian-Made Jewellery Means at inSync

“Australian jewellery” can mean several different things.

A brand may be Australian-owned. A piece may be designed here but manufactured elsewhere. Or the jewellery may be designed and made here by the person whose ideas sit behind the work.

At inSync, provenance is part of the story of the jewellery.

Who designs inSync jewellery?

I’m Iris Saar Isaacs, the founder and designer of inSync design. I draw and develop the pieces as part of my Melbourne design practice, exploring line, movement, negative space and the relationship between jewellery and the body.

Where is inSync jewellery made?

inSync jewellery is made in Melbourne, Australia. The studio practice combines design and making with specialist local processes where required for particular finishes.

Why does provenance matter?

When you know who designed a piece and where it came from, jewellery becomes more than an anonymous object. You can understand the designer’s language, follow collections over time and recognise the thinking behind the work.

Is Australian-made the same as Australian-designed?

No. “Designed in Australia” describes where the design originated. It does not necessarily mean the finished object was made here. When origin matters to you, look for clear information about both design and manufacture.

Why does inSync use stainless steel?

Material is part of the design language. Stainless steel gives me strength, relative lightness and architectural possibility. Depending on the piece, the steel may remain raw, receive a matt gold plated finish, or be finished with powder coat.

The designer is part of the work

The jewellery is the artwork. The brand is the gallery. The woman is the collector. Behind each piece is a design practice, a material decision and a person who drew the first line.
