Beauty Isn’t a Formula
Creative Reflection #02
Some of the most beautiful objects never ask for attention. They simply belong.
People often ask me what makes something beautiful.
After decades of designing and making jewellery, I still don’t think beauty can be explained by a formula.
It isn’t found in colour alone.
Or proportion.
Or material.
Or finish.
Beauty emerges when all of these elements come together in harmony.
When I’m designing a new piece, I’m constantly making small adjustments.
A curve.
Composition.
Thickness of line.
The scale.
The weight.
The colour.
The finish.
The way it rests in the palm of your hand.
None of these decisions exists in isolation.
They’re all in conversation with one another.
A tiny change in one element affects every other.
Eventually, there comes a moment when I stop changing things.
Not because the piece is perfect.
But because it feels right, and everything belongs together.
That’s when a design feels resolved.
Over the years I’ve realised that beauty isn’t something I consciously create.
It quietly reveals itself when enough thoughtful decisions come together with balance, intention and care.
Perhaps that’s why truly timeless objects never feel like they’re trying too hard.
They simply feel… right.
